There Are Many Flooring Options Available
This is a question that we get asked a lot, and our best answer is: It depends on what you’re looking for. Yeah, we know, it’s not the cut and dry answer you might have wanted, but we promise that taking some time to think about the peculiarities of your home and its individual rooms will yield a much more satisfying result when it comes time to actually install your flooring.
There are a number of considerations that need to be taken into account when you’re deciding what kind of flooring to install in your home, so let’s take some time to break down your options by looking at flooring choices by answering three different questions:
1. What is your budget?
When it comes time to refloor your home, perhaps the most important question you need to ask is, “how much money am I willing to spend on this project?” Remember, you want your house to look great, but be responsible in your finances to avoid headaches down the road.
The first budgetary factor to consider is the amount of preparation that will be required to start the reflooring process. Ripping up carpet or tiles and hauling waste are going to drive up the cost of labor, so remember to factor this into your budget.
From there, you should start to think about what kind of material is in your price range. Generally speaking, the most affordable options are going to be
laminate and
LVP flooring. These materials are a great option for folks looking to save some money but still receive a quality product.
Floor Prices Can Vary Greatly
Hardwood floors are probably the best looking option, but the price will vary depending on the type of wood used. You can think of hardwood floors as generally being in the mid-price range, but with the caveat that premium woods such as mahogany and cherry are going to carry a hefty price tag.
Tile floors are the most expensive type of flooring both in terms of material and labor costs, which is one of the reasons you usually only see them in smaller rooms such as bathrooms.
Be honest with yourself about what you can afford and move on to your next consideration which is…
2. What are my aesthetic considerations?
You want your home to look amazing, so the next factor to consider is the look you’re going for.
For our two cents, nothing really comes close to the timeless look of hardwood floors. Given the versatility of colors available in different types of wood and the personality of planks with their own unique grains, hardwood floors are the most aesthetically pleasing choice to be had.
To be clear, more affordable options like laminate and LVP flooring are extremely customizable and look great when properly installed, but if you can swing the budget for hardwood flooring, it is definitely worth it. Hardwood flooring also plays into our next question to consider, which is…
3. What is the utility of the room to be refloored?
The question of utility is too often overlooked when it comes to choosing flooring. Budget and aesthetics are extremely important, but you want to be sure that you are choosing the right type of flooring for each room in your home.
For example, hardwood flooring is extremely durable and long lasting even in high traffic areas in your home, but might not be the right choice for rooms that are used for heavy equipment such as home gyms or workshops. In rooms where there is the potential for heavy items to be dropped, a material like
epoxy flooring or polished concrete will be able to withstand far more punishment.
It's Important to Remember How the Room is Used
High traffic areas where you often entertain guests will benefit from the attractiveness and durability of hardwood flooring, while rooms that are likely to change quite a bit over the years like nurseries might be better suited for laminate or LVP flooring that can be more easily replaced.
Once you’ve thought about your wallet and your style, think about what the rooms in your house are actually used for to get a better picture of the type of material you should choose.
